The Story That Reflects God’s Heart✨❤️

Everyone knows David as the young shepherd who defeated Goliath. But behind his story of courage lies another—one that beautifully displays the mercy of God. It’s the story of David’s covenant friendship with Jonathan and his kindness toward Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.

In 1 Samuel 20:16–17, David and Jonathan made a covenant of loyalty and mercy. Long after Jonathan’s death, David remembered his promise and sought to show kindness to Jonathan’s family.

“Is there still anyone left of the house of Saul to whom I may show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” — 2 Samuel 9:1

From Lo Debar to the King’s Table

Ziba, Saul’s former servant, told David about Mephibosheth, who lived in Lo-Debar—a barren place meaning “no pasture.” Mephibosheth, lame and fearful, expected death when summoned to the king’s presence.

But instead of judgment, he received grace. David told him:

“Do not fear, for I will surely show you kindness for Jonathan’s sake. I will restore to you all the land of Saul your grandfather, and you shall eat bread at my table continually.” — 2 Samuel 9:7

What Mephibosheth didn’t know was that David’s favor wasn’t based on his worth but on a covenant made long before he was born.

A Picture of God’s Covenant Mercy

This moment mirrors the gospel.

Just as David extended mercy for Jonathan’s sake, God extends mercy to us for Jesus’ sake. We were once broken, distant, and living in spiritual Lo Debar—a place of shame and emptiness. But God called us out, not to destroy us but to restore us.

Through Christ, we are invited to sit at His table continually—not as servants, but as sons and daughters of the King.
