From the Old Testament, we know of many prophets—great and small—who spoke on behalf of God to His people. After Moses, Joshua, and Caleb, God appointed a new prophet for Israel: Samuel.
The name Samuel means “Name of God” or “God has heard.” Beautiful, isn’t it? His very name carries the message of answered prayer.
The Beginning of a Miracle
In 1 Samuel 1, we read that Samuel’s father, Elkanah (meaning “God has purchased” or “God has created”), was from the tribe of Ephraim.
He had two wives:
• Peninnah—meaning “precious stone.”
• Hannah—meaning “grace” or “favor.”
Peninnah had many children, while Hannah had none. Yet, when Elkanah offered sacrifices, he gave portions to Peninnah and her children—but a double portion to Hannah.
The Power of the Double Portion
In Mosaic law, the double portion was reserved for the firstborn—the heir of inheritance, authority, and blessing. It represented both abundance and divine favor.
But why would Elkanah give Hannah, who had no children, the firstborn’s blessing?
Because in God’s eyes, grace always receives what the law cannot produce.
Law vs. Grace: A Hidden Symbolism
Peninnah’s ten children represent the Law, which was written on stone tablets. Yet, despite her abundance, none of her sons was chosen as a prophet.
Hannah, on the other hand—though barren—carried Grace. Through her, the prophetic voice of God was reborn in Israel.
When Hannah prayed with deep anguish, the priest Eli (meaning “My God” or “ascension”) saw her and told her, “Go in peace; may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.”
Hannah believed, wiped her tears, and left in faith, and soon, Grace gave birth to a miracle.
Faith Activates Grace
When Samuel was born, his name declared, “God has heard.”
Every detail in the story aligns with divine intent:
• Elkanah—"God "has purchased”
• Hannah – “Grace.”
• Samuel – “God has heard.”
Read backward: "God has heard; grace has been purchased.”
What a revelation! It points straight to Jesus—the One through whom grace was purchased by His blood.
Grace Still Speaks Today
The story of Samuel isn’t just history—it’s a living picture of how God works even now.
The law can’t produce miracles. Only grace through faith does.
When you operate in faith, believing in God’s goodness, you position yourself for His miraculous response.
So when life feels barren and silent, remember this:
Grace is revealed where faith is active—and God still hears.
Amen.
